Any person
who comes to a Tomatis Centre for an
initial consultation is first of all asked
to do an
Audio-psycho-phonological assessment
(APPA, duration
around 90 min).
This APPA must take place with a
consultant certified by the IARCTC
(International Association
of Certified Tomatis Consultants).
It takes place in three phases:
-
First of
all, there is an anamnesis
where the subject's history is
reconstituted.In this first phase, the
aim is to define the reasons which led
to the subject decision to consult a
Tomatis centre, but also to understand
the subject's motivation (or the
family's motivation in the case of a
child), an indispensable condition
before beginning any procedure.
-
Then,
a certain amount of tests
are performed (laterality
test, listening test,...)
-
Finally, in
an in-depth consultation
the consultant presents the
distortions in listening brought to
light by the tests and defines the means
of action which the Tomatis method can
provide to resolve the disorders or
difficulties encountered.
Following
this assessment, it is possible to begin
a
procedure with the Tomatis method,
in the form of intensive listening
sessions. As a general rule, a
frequency of 4 to 6 two-hour sessions per
week is recommended. Each
period of listening sessions is followed
by a pause of several weeks
which is necessary for the
progressive elaboration of listening
mechanisms and their integration.
The number of periods of listening as well
a their duration will of course depend on
the nature of the problem to be resolved.
All through
the procedure, tests and consultations
take place at regular intervals, with the
purpose of monitoring and evaluating the
progress made as well as the work that
remains to be accomplished.
In certain cases, in order to revive the
subject's desire to listen, a recording of
the mother's voice may be necessary. The
voice recording will be then be
reprocessed in a laboratory, in order to
be restored to acoustic conditions close
to those existing in the intra uterine
environment.
